Ghana: Winter Break 2023-2024
Youth Development in Ghana, West Africa
Winter Intercession Study Abroad Program
By taking part in this study abroad experience you will immerse yourself into the Ghanaian culture and society, which will give you an in-depth understanding about the local culture, history and livelihoods. Through service-learning and educational activities, you will gain a greater perspective and understanding of our global interdependence through Ghana's link to America. Prior to the trip, you will take a preparation course to better educate ourselves about Ghana, responsible global engagement and service. You will be exposed to important topics such as social organization and relations, sustainable development, girls' education, the history of the Ghanaian slave trade, artisan and aesthetic traditions, and much more. This service opportunity will include teaching at a local school, volunteering at an after-school program, working on poverty alleviation, and volunteering at an orphanage nearby.

Cuba: Spring Break 2018
Travel to Havana and Pinar del Rio, Cuba over Spring Break 2018! This nine day one credit program (when you enroll in ETST 182, which allows for financial aid to be used) will guide students through:
- Identifying the main issues and challenges in Cuba’s society, economy, and political systems
- Describing the main issues and challenges in foreign relations between Cuba and the United States
- Recognizing the role of race and gender in Cuban society
Jamaica: May 2017
Green & Global – Jamaica
Students who participate in athletics at Colorado State University had an opportunity to take their education abroad in May 2017 with the first Green and Global community engagement-learning experience in Jamaica.
The Green & Global initiative was designed to expand students’ learning opportunities with an transformative experience abroad.
“There has been an on-going national conversation about broadening the experiences for students participating in intercollegiate athletics beyond their on-campus academic and athletic pursuits,” said Joe Parker, CSU’s Director of Athletics. “Colorado State University is fortunate to have the expertise of Dr. Albert Bimper and the resources to design a high-impact program that allows our students to absorb the benefits of a service and learning experience abroad.”
The 13 student-athletes who took part in this groundbreaking experience traveled to Petersfield, Jamaica from May 18-28, 2017, and experienced cultural immersion, social action and community-based engaged learning. Students were hosted by local families, with 2-4 students per home.
“We’re extremely proud to launch our Green & Global initiative at CSU for our student-athletes,” Bimper said. “I believe that this opportunity presents a transformative experience for each participant. This trip will be an opportunity for them to explore and be immersed in the rich culture, history and livelihood present in Jamaica while also challenging students to broaden their identities beyond sport. This initiative is about holistic development and community engagement.”
While Jamaica is known for its beach-oriented tourist attractions, program participants lived in the small, rural community of Petersfield, which offered a glimpse into a more authentic Jamaican culture, with its location in the heart of the sugar-producing regions of central Westmoreland Parish.
Student-athletes met with local community leaders, participated in need-based service projects and explored the country and culture through community guided tours, presentations and community events. In addition to cultural immersion, students explored Roaring River Park, Bluefields Beach, Savannah La Mar, Frome Sugar Factory and Maroon Village, and visit local schools. Cultural presentations focused on Jamaican history and culture, youth development in Jamaica and culinary arts to gain a greater understanding of the region.
In partnership with the CSU Office of International Programs, Dr. Bimper of the Ethnic Studies department and Student Athlete Support Services selected from a pool of student-athlete applicants, sophomores and older, based on various criteria.
Constantly growing and evolving, Colorado State seeks to provide students with a transformational experience, and the 2017 Green & Global education abroad opportunity expands that reality beyond our borders.
The Green & Global initiative will take a new group of student-athletes back to Petersfield, Jamaica next May in 2018.
