Dr. Patricia Zavella will give the talk “Reproductive Justice in the Post-Dobbs Era” as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series on April 14, 2023 at Canvas Stadium, room 1024.
Dr. Patricia Zavella’s (she/her) talk will discuss the social movement that focuses on reproductive justice that originated in Black feminist organizing in the 1990s and quickly became multiracial. She will analyze how this movement, which approaches organizing using intersectionality and human rights, constructs strategic tactics designed to change hearts and minds about reproductive freedom as well as other structural inequalities. The talk ends with reflections about how women of color have responded to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision that nullified Roe v. Wade.
Dr. Zavella is an anthropologist and professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz in the Latin American and Latino Studies department. She has spent a career advancing Latina and Chicana feminism through her scholarship, teaching, and activism. She has made critical contributions to understanding how gender, race, nation, and class intersect in specific contexts through her scholarship, teaching, advocacy, and mentorship. Zavella’s research focuses on migration, gender and health in Latina/o communities, Latino families in transition, feminist studies, and ethnographic research methods. Zavella received the American Anthropological Association’s award from the Committee on Gender Equity in Anthropology to recognize her career studying gender discrimination. Her most recent book, The Movement for Reproductive Justice: Empowering Women of Color through Social Activism, was published in 2020 by NYU Press.
