In light of the high STD rates among Native American populations, we are investigating the key sexual health behaviors of Native American youth in the Plains and Southwest regions. The knowledge gained from this study will be used to develop future interventions and outreach efforts aimed at curbing the high rates of STDs among Native American youth. An in-depth understanding of the sexual health needs, concerns, and interests of Native American youth is vital for the future development of successful social marketing and information campaigns about sexual health for this population. This project plans to develop contacts (for on-going capacity building), conduct focus groups and semi-structured interviews, and with youth in investigating and conceptualizing key STD prevention messages. This project builds a collaborative and multidisciplinary research team with expertise in Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, Law, Social Work, Mass Communication, and Health. It also addresses the global health problem of STDs and minority health.
