Dr. Vernon is a Full Professor at Colorado State University, Chair of the Ethnic Studies Department and the Assistant to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. She was appointed for the Fall 2009 term as the Associate Provost of Special Projects where she worked on a number of projects including developing family friendly resources and RAMS for Diversity activities. She is also committed to the discipline of Ethnic Studies and is an Executive Board member of the National Association for Ethnic Studies. Currently, she is the Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Faculty that is charged to focus explicitly on issues impacting the work life, campus climate, and persistent barriers inhibiting the success of women faculty at Colorado State. She has also worked in the field of Native Americans health and HIV/AIDS for over a decade and has had membership in several professional health societies such the Racial and Ethnic Populations Ad Hoc Committee, National Institute of Health; Indigenous HIV/AIDS Research Training Council; Colorado HIV Prevention Advisory Committee; and Colorado HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention Coalition. As well, Dr. Vernon has provided capacity building assistance aimed at mobilizing Native communities around HIV/AIDS prevention throughout the United States. She is the author of Killing Us Quietly: Native Americans and HIV/AIDS (2001) and several other journal articles. Her research area is Native American health, particularly HIV/AIDS, and is currently working with Native Americans and Hawaiian transgender populations.
